At Hospice of Humboldt, we know that heroes don’t always wear capes. Sometimes they wear a stethoscope, carry a gentle smile, drink too much coffee, and answer their phone at 2 a.m. For more than 20 years, Dr. John Nelson has been one of those everyday heroes, serving as our Medical Director and leaving an imprint that will last for generations.
Dr. Nelson never looks for recognition, but the way he cares for people spoke louder than any award. Families tell us how his calm presence brought comfort during life’s hardest moments. Staff admire his leadership, his wisdom, and his ability to balance serious decisions with a kind word or a wry joke that lightens the mood after a long night on call. He has the gift of making people feel heard, respected, and cared for, no matter how fragile the situation.
Over the years, Dr. Nelson became a teacher, mentor, and friend to countless staff members. He showed us that true courage does not come from being larger than life, but from showing up every day, even when it meant being awakened in the middle of the night to guide a family through crisis. His example helped shape Hospice of Humboldt into the trusted provider it is today, serving hundreds of families each year.
The values he lives by, compassion, integrity, and service, are still with us. They are carried forward by our nurses, social workers, aides, spiritual caregivers, volunteers, and every member of our team. They are also visible in the recognition we recently received from Medicare: Hospice of Humboldt is one of the few hospices in California and across the nation to earn a 5-Star rating, the highest possible. Only 5 percent of hospices in California and 15 percent nationally achieve this distinction. This honor is more than a number. It reflects the dedication of our staff and the strong foundation Dr. Nelson helped to build.
This October, we are proud to celebrate Dr. Nelson’s retirement and to thank him for everything he has given to Hospice of Humboldt and our community. “Dr. Nelson has been a steady and trusted presence for so many years,” says Dr. Charlie Knoll, our new Medical Director. “We are grateful for his leadership, and I feel fortunate to continue building on the strong foundation he created.”
Though he may be stepping back from his daily role, we know Dr. Nelson will not be far. His influence will live on in the way we care for our patients, the way we support one another, and the way we serve this community with compassion and joy. For us, and for the many families he touched, Dr. John Nelson will always be a hero. And if we know him well, he will always be just a phone call away, coffee in hand, ready to help.
